What Is Web 2.0?

Many people get online every day for personal reasons or to do a home business. No one usually thinks about what the web is called or how it works. They only care about the fact that it does work and that they can use it for their needs. Everyone usually refers to the internet as the web. However, the term web 2.0 has been going around online a lot lately.

So what exactly is web 2.0? It became a popular term because of O’Reilly media and Media Live International. It became the name for a service of web development conferences that was started in October of 2004. The main reason that it came about was because of the number of growing businesses on the internet and the applications that were being made available on the web. The exact definition of it has not been reached as of yet.

An easier way to describe it is to tell you that it is basically new internet tools and technologies that were created with the idea that people online shouldn’t just be reading information, they should be taking an active role in helping customize media and technology for their own purposes, as well as those of other communities.

You can look all over the internet and find different web 2.0 applications. Some of the applications are used by home business owners and they don’t even realize they are using them.

Google Adsense - Here the information on your site is read and then related ads are shown.

Flickr – Here you can upload pictures and share them with the community and they can then be printed by anyone.

RSS feeds – Here there is content shown that comes from all over the web.

Blogs – Most everyone knows what this is. They are simple sites that you can set up easily to provide people with fresh up to date content that they find valuable.

Other tools that were brought about and that are considered web 2.0 are blogs, social networking applications, social networking tools and wikis.

There is really no clear way to tell you in an article exactly what web 2.0 is because it can get complicated. The best way for you to learn about web 2.0 applications and what it means is to do some research of your own. There are diagrams that are available that you can get a better understanding of what it is. You just have to do a search about it and see if you can get a clear understanding.
